‘The Sense of Things’ comprises a limited collection of acrylics on sketchbook paper. Painted in a single sitting, each one is an attempt to remember, feel and depict a place, set of relations, or an interior. They seem to embody a sense of still life, landscape and portraiture all at once. And while a cohesive whole, their spontaneous, gestural qualities vary from one to the next – weaving in divergent ideas, colours and marks. They are united by a sense of urgency and oscillating impulses in image making: some are densely painted and layered while others are light and flyaway. Each is jewel-like, with their smallness maximising their expressive intensity.
